Guest Blogger: Tracy from All Thumbs Crafts!

Hey all, give it up for Tracy from All Thumbs Crafts with a guest post on a fab pillow tutorial for us today!  Be sure to visit her blog and tell her you found her from SSB!

Hey, everybody. I'm so happy to be here guest posting on Ginger's fun blog. Ginger gave my All Thumbs Crafts' blog one of its very first features ever, which was so encouraging to me! (Thank you, Ginger)!

So I guess with guest blogging, you tell a little bit about yourself. Well, here goes...I'm a single mom who is fortunate to be able to work out of the home as a freelance writer. Back in October, 2010, I started my own blog called The Prairie Patch. It mainly deals with prim decor, but since I have such eclectic tastes, I started up All Thumbs Crafts. It's there where I share my latest crafting experiments.

My other blogs are: Craft Supplies Sales and Resources, North Pole Diaries, Handmade Teddy Bears and Raggedies, and the Sunburnt Cow Handmade Shop. The latter two feature various artisans who sell handmade items. I also have two link parties: one on the Prairie Patch, which deals with prim decor items and goes from Sundays to Wednesdays, and the Sunburnt Cow, which runs from Wednesdays to Sundays. The Sunburnt Cow link party is slightly different from other link parties in that I encourage those who have blog posts revolving around handmade items they have for sale to link up. This party can be anything handmade; it's not strictly in the prim/old fashioned look.

Additionally, the Sunburnt Cow will be holding its first Udderly Amazing New Shop Contest beginning April 1st. The contests will be once a month, rotating between Sunburnt Cow and the Teddies and Raggedies blogs. If you know of artisans who have new online shops that could fit into either general handmade items or teddies/raggedies, please pass the info along to them!

Now that we have my intro completed, let me share a super easy tutorial for those of us who aren't sewing whizzes and who also want to upcycle, recycle, repurpose, or whatever you want to label it. :)

Got a pair of jeans that you don't want to toss out? Why not make them into a jeans pillow!? They're so shabby chic, and you can embellish them to suit your style and personality!

As you can see with the above picture, even those worn patches can be "works of art". :) I knew I'd like how the worn out patch would look on the pillow, but I also knew I wanted to put something else in the middle. That's why I moved the leg seams to the middle of each side of the pillow so that the worn patch would be in the corner. Cute, huh?

You could probably surmise how to do this without a tutorial, but I'll share a tip for those who are sewing challenged like myself. Use straight leg pants because those are a lot easier to make into pillows: you'll only have one seam to sew. Otherwise, one side of the pillow will be longer than the other. You can always fix it by sewing it so it's more even, but I like things as simple as possible when it comes to sewing. And since I want to only sew one side, I cut the pant leg near the bottom, where there's already a seam.

Then decorate it the way you want. In the first photo, I wrapped some purple plaid around the pillow (after I stuffed it) and did a little hand sewn seam in the back. Then I wrapped a rag strip of fabric and added buttons.

If you're going to sew buttons, patches, or anything like that, don't sew your seam just yet. In this way, you can hand sew whatever you want a lot easier than if you had sewn the one side shut. I learned that the frustrating way!

As I mentioned above, with using the bottom of the pant leg as the opening of the pillow, you have a ready made seam. Now that's my kind of sewing project, i.e., very little sewing! :) (Or, as you can see in the first photo, you can roll up the ends like you do with some jeans - if you're short like me).

To make this really shabby chic and eco-friendly, I also used scraps of fabric to stuff my pillows. Then just sew some buttons on the end to close up the opening or sew a smaller "pillow" inside with ugly fabric you don't like, stuff it with rags, and then slip it inside your jeans pillow.

And voila! A great way to use up things that would otherwise get tossed or sit in storage for years.

Alrighty then!  A great way to re-cycle!  Thanks Tracy!
Hope everyone enjoyed that!  Be sure to check out Feature Fridays and see if you wanna participate!

Feature Friday's...you think..?

I have had an idea for a while now and I think I'm ready to put it into effect here is the next couple of weeks...depending on the type of response I get.  After all, I don't want to take on a new feature responsibility if no one is really interested...but, I think you all may like it.

What it is:
It's something I call Feature Friday at SSB and basically, its a way for new blogs, established blogs, craft blogs, personal blogs...whatever type blog to get a little free PR.  My goal is to begin a wish list for blogs/bloggers that would like to be featured at SSB.

How to get on the wish list:
The blogs will be featured in the order in which I receive the request.  Although your thoughts are ALWAYS appreciated by posting a comment, you can get your blog on the wish list by email alone.

What your email should include:
Include "Feature Friday" in the subject line (as these will be going to my personal email and I don't want anyone to be accidentally overlooked). Your email should include a small paragraph about why you blog and a small paragraph about your blog and include at least 2 pics.  I will respond to your email on the day that I post about your blog, including the link to the feature in the email so you can see!  That way its a total surprise :)

What you have to do:
Nothing.  There is no cost for it.  You don't have to snag the I was Featured button.  You are not required to post or blog about it (although I would appreciate it if you did)...no requirements what so ever.  Just something kind to do for another fellow blogger.

I'm giving this a 2 week shot.  If there is a good response, I will go ahead with it.  My goal is to always have someone readily available to feature.  This is for EVERYONE!  I will not pass over those who have already been featured by Mad Skills, or thru any other SSB posting.  Everyone WILL be featured!

The only restriction is that I will have to limit everyone to one Feature Friday every 3 mths.  That way there is always something new and fresh for Fridays.  But don't despair,  I'm am fixing to host my very first guest blogger.  If you don't wanna wait 3 mths and have something totally awesome to share...like, NOW, contact me about doing a guest blog.

So that's it.  Post a comment letting me know what you think.  I can't wait to hear from you!!

Whatever Wednesday #23

Just a quick Whatever Wednesday for you today...

...something funny Jack did the other day that I wanna share with you all.

He runs in with two slanted train track pieces on his head and proudly announced,
"Look, I have girl hair!"

Ha!  He is so goofy...

Art by Accident

So my husband was taking pics of his remote control car's LED's (I know...weird) and of course, none of them came out the way he wanted.  I came across them on the camera and thought they looked rather interesting.

Pretty cool in fact!  Some art by accident...
When I saw this one, I imagined I was hundreds of feet up, floating above a light up race-car track with the stands packed with fans!!!  (I know...weird)

And check this one out!
I love the stark black with an eerie, flame-like wave just off-center.  Incredible composition...even if by accident!
I'm even thinking of printing it out and framing it...though I don't know where I would hang it.

What do you guys think??  Either "Go Michael!" or "I don't get it...?"

Trash to Treasure Dresser

So we were on the way home the other night and were passing a garage sale where I pleaded like a blubbering fool for my husband to turn around and go back so I could "just take a quick peek".

Of course, I saw this and fell in love.
This horribly sad, mistreated dresser with a poor and insulting coat of black spray paint covering the front.  I saw potential...plus we were is desperate need of a low dresser (Sam is starting to try and climb on everything).  And it would nice to own one with drawers that opened and closed properly, like they're supposed to.

So I asked the dude how much...and...$20.  SOLD!
I gave my husband the good news that we were now the proud owners of this puppy and would now have to figure out a way to get it home.  After much maneuvering, we managed to get it in the van and later in the garage.

Here's shot of some of the damage.
Also some paneling coming off the sides.  So sad.

Anyhoo, I nailed the siding down and began sanding some of the spray paint off.
I then gave a base coat of white (which I didn't take a pic of..we've all seen white.)
Let dry and plant some flowers.
Come back and layer 3 coats of a beautiful butter-creme yellow...which, I'll add was FREE.  Leftover paint from my sons nursery.

A great addition to the playroom for only $20!
I hopefully will be finishing up the playroom here in the next couple of weeks, depending on whether I got the funds or not!  I'll take a pic of it in the room when I get done.

Mad Skills Monday #48

Happy St. Patty's Day!!
I know...a little late, but hey.  It's the thought that counts!

On to Mad Skills...'bout time, right?

Check out this super cute March plaque from Just Another Hang Up

Love it!  You know...I don't have any St. Patrick's Day decor.  I'm even part Irish, but it is still a fun holiday!  These crafts have giving me some fun ideas for next year!

Anyhoo! Great work everyone! Loved checking everything out this week!

My Most Sincere Thanks!

Hi everyone...hope you didn't think I dropped of the planet.  Phew!  Things have been nutty!

I'm sure you're all wondering what the heck was going on, and well, I'll disclose a bit, but for right this minute, I want to take a minute to express my most sincere thank you to all of you for your support, sweet comments, prayers, and thoughts for us over the past 2 weeks.

Reading some of those comments literally brought me to tears at one point and to know that folks I'd never met were thinking of me and sending love my way was just too too much...and too kind!

Thank you again!

So we've been thru a lot lately.  Its really been building up for the past few months and honestly, I'm not real sure where I stand right now?

We are experiencing some financial difficulty (who isn't right?) and its hard to cut corners to save when there isn't really any corners left to cut.  That's the main reason I haven't displayed any new and brilliant crafts lately...no doe.  But my husband just secured a second job for a few evenings a week and hopefully, once we get going, we can start to build up our savings again and get back on track with the bills.

Secondly, I've been sick.  Not sure whats going on and my doctor and I have been trying some different therapies to get a handle on it.  I won't get too into it, but a lot of unbearable headaches, joint pain, muscle pain, nausea/vomiting...not fun at all.

And being sick sucks.  Makes you sad...even depressed.  Makes me angry and irritable.  Makes me mean, ug.  So I'm also working on that.

Then the heavy responsibilities of being a working mother, the long hours, dinners, doctor visits...it gets exhausting.  Your husband and children see you as superwoman and hold you on a pedestal.  There is nobody like mommy!  Even superwoman gets overwhelmed.

My husband and I have taken the past 2 weeks to really take a good look at everything and try to make some changes.  We've gotten some suggested books and resources to look over, we've begun to see a family counselor, and have come up with a money plan.  We're covering all bases and hopefully, things will iron out.

In the meantime, I'm gonna keep on truck'n best I can.  I'll be around here, although maybe not as much crafting as I'd like.  So check back often, Mad Skills will resume this Monday.  And where I tried to post everyday in the past, it just may not be in the cards at the moment.

AWAL for awhile... :(

Hi folks, I know you are expecting Mad Skills Monday but we've had a few wrong turns over the past week and I'm going to have to take a quick break from SSB.

Now don't cry...I'll be back in a week once my head is clear and I have fresh perspective.  Hopefully, things around here will have calmed down and I can actually get back to crafting and blogging!

So please don't give up on me!  Stick around and cheer me on as I get my life back on track!
Love you all!
See you soon!
